Music from Medieval Gotland
Cantus Gotlandicus – the Song from Gotland – is a program giving life to medieval chant that for centuries have been forgotten in archives and churches. The music is taken from manuscripts that were used during the Middle Ages in churches on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea.
The manuscripts are preserved as fragments at the Gotland Museum and have been investigated and brought to life by Gemma’s director Karin Strinnholm Lagergren.
The program had its premiere with five concerts on Gotland in July and August 2012 where the music was heard for the first time since the Middle Ages. The project was sponsored by the Municipality of Gotland, The Gotland Museum, Gotlandsmusiken, Sensus, Kulturföreningen Roxy and De Badande Wännerna.
